New years eve 2012; I wake up in Taupo after spending the previous evening getting to know the locals (read: getting drunk with the locals) in a pub in town.
My friend and I decide to get breakfast and then visit the Waikato River’s largest waterfall; Huka Falls.
Huka Falls is created by the normally 100m wide Waikato River narrowing to just 15m causing huge volumes of water to crash together which then makes the 11m drop back into the aqua blue river below.
You can easily get to Huka Falls by driving 5 minutes north of Lake Taupo or by walking from Taupo town centre. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation have listed some of the most popular walks here.
When we arrived I could hear the falls before I could see them but when I did see them I was not disappointed.

Wow, they’re gorgeous! Nice photos too
Where is Taupo?

Hi Beverley!
I just came back from Auckland a few weeks ago and yes Huka Falls was just so breathtakingly beautiful! It reminded me of Niagara Falls a little, what with the gushing icy jet blue water trickling downwards. I miss it already!
Cheers,
Fie
