It wasn’t my first time in Manchester, but it was the first time I’d spent more than a few hours in the city. And, since January is miserable for all sorts of reasons, I was looking forward to a weekend of exploring and relaxing in a hotel afterwards rather than getting the train back to Leeds mere hours after arriving. Just a five minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly station, and ideally located for exploring Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter, Roomzzz Aparthotel Manchester City was exactly the kind of home from home I was looking for.
Staying at Roomzzz Aparthotel Manchester City
Wanting to make the most of my time away, I got to Manchester early, and spent a few hours walking around taking photos and ticking a couple of attractions off my list before enjoying a late lunch in the Northern Quarter. I’d wrapped up warm for the cold January day, but I was definitely looking forward to checking into my Roomzzz apartment and warming up with a long shower.
Or not, because approximately two minutes after unlocking the door, hanging my coat on the rack, and putting the kettle on in the apartment’s kitchen, I realised that there was a waterproof TV in the bathroom. Goodbye shower, hello bubble bath.
I spent the next hour up to my neck in water, a cup of tea cooling on the side of the bath, Legally Blonde on the screen in front of me. Then, skin suitably prune-like, I made another cup of tea and did the square root of absolutely nothing for a couple of hours.
On other city breaks, I’ve made the mistake of using wherever I’m staying as just a base to explore from and I’ve often come home more exhausted than when I left. In the past, I’d have dumped my bags and headed straight back out. But I didn’t want to do that in Manchester. I wanted to make the most of the apartment and its proper fitted kitchen (complete with dishwasher, full-size fridge, and mini hob), its lovely lounge area by the window, its big bed and TV.
I wanted to do that thing I hardly ever do when I travel: actually relax.
Besides, I knew that after a good night’s sleep I’d have no trouble getting up in the morning to go out and capture the city while it was still Sunday-morning quiet.
It was still dark when I woke up the next day – too dark, really, to go out and take the photos I’d planned – so before I headed out with my camera I took my time packing, stood under the rainfall shower for longer than I can remember, and as the sun started peaking through the blinds, sat down for a cup of tea and a pastry.
It didn’t feel as though I was staying in a hotel. It felt like I was just looking after someone’s incredibly cool inner-city apartment for the weekend. Someone who’d left me teabags and coffee on the counter, and a dishwasher tablet just in case I didn’t want to wash up, and some mini toiletries in the bathroom.
With its big windows and high ceilings, the Grade II listed building was full of character but also had all the modern amenities you’d want in a hotel. There was even a shop in reception stocked with ready meals and treats for those nights when you want to cook at home instead of going to a restaurant, open 24 hours a day.
That’s what the Roomzzz apartment felt like: a home from home, and one I’d definitely stay in again.
Situated on Princess Street, Roomzzz is in a great location for exploring Manchester on foot. Manchester Art Gallery, Town Hall, and Chinatown are all nearby, with Spinningfields, the Northern Quarter, and the Arndale Centre just ten minutes walk away. The hotel’s easily reached from Piccadilly Station if you’re arriving by train, although there’s also parking available at Manchester Q Park.
The Manchester Princess Street hotel is home to 59 stylish apartments, all of which have well-equipped kitchens (with a dishwater, hob, and microwave), free wifi, a separate living area with a TV and sofa, and White Company toiletries. I stayed in the Elegance Suite, but there are also a range of studios to choose from, as well as a Loft Suite and Penthouse Suite for those looking for an extra special stay.
